announce

THE ANNUAL AMERICAN STUDIES STUDENT CONFERENCE

This year’s topic is:

Ecocriticism and American Studies

7 May 2010

Deadline for submissions: 15 April 2010

We invite student contributions to the fourth edition of the annual American Studies Student Conference, co-organized by the Center for American Studies, University of Bucharest, and the American Cultural Center.

Ecocriticism, one of the latest – and essentially interdisciplinary - developments in literary criticism, is largely defined as “the study of the relationships between literature and the physical world” (Glotfelty and Fromm, 1996), interrogating the ways in which literature not only reflects, but also mediates human engagement with the environment. We welcome papers in the areas of American civilization, American literature and American Studies on topics relating to ecocriticism and environmental concerns in all forms of cultural production.

Papers (in the form of 10-15 minute presentations) may wish to address:

- representations of nature in 19th and 20th century American philosophy and literature;

- urban landscapes as dystopias;

- representations of nature in film;

- the eco stream in contemporary literature;

- environmental activism and Native American Studies (land/water rights; displacement v. cultural revitalization; cultural narratives of land and identity);

- place and space in American literature.

For any questions or suggestions, please send an email to: ruxandra.radulescu@americanstudies.ro or radulescu.ruxandra@yahoo.com.

To register, please send an email with your name and a short abstract (a 60-word description of your paper) by 15 April 2010 to: ruxandra.radulescu@americanstudies.ro or radulescu.ruxandra@yahoo.com.
